Food & Booze News of the Day

by mkelleher on May 8, 2012

At Access, we have a variety of food, wine and spirit clients and as such, we are constantly digesting the news of the day within these categories. Starting today, May 8th, Access will share the food & booze headlines that keep us salivating from week to week. From new FDA regulations to the hottest cocktail new bar trends, we’ll put a fork in what matters most.

Here’s the latest news that caught our eye:

Battling Childhood Obesity – Multiple Strategies Needed
The Institute of Medicine put out a new report today that looked directly at the obesity epidemic among America’s children and concluded there isn’t a one-size-fits-all strategy to fix the trend. Clear and consistent messaging with physical activity and nutrition being a primary message, along with government regulations expected to come through in the coming year, will help parents distinguish what claims are real and what products are really good for their family.

James Beard Foundation Announces Winners
This past weekend, the James Beard Foundation honored excellence in food within the categories of books, broadcast and journalism. The two big publication wins were Food52, a website that expanded from a crowd-sourced cookbook to a full-blown food community, and Gastronomica, a site that blends together “the pleasures and aesthetics of food combined with the latest in food studies, food, culture, and society.” Taking a closer look at both sites, Food52 has done an excellent job of creating a two-way dialogue with their readers, encouraging them to get involved in the content as much as the writers. As social advocates, we love what they are doing and cannot wait to see how they grow over the next few years.

Skinnygirl Cocktails Taking Over
Americans attention to food consumed on a daily basis is now also influencing the drink world, too. Skinnygirl cocktails was the fastest growing brand of spirits in 2011 and shows no signs of slowing down with four lines of premixed vodka cocktails and three wines debuting later this month. We’re curious to see what other brands will arise throughout the rest of 2012 to add a little competition to this “skinny” space.

Cheers until next week!
